The pre-existing two-story Western Union structure on the site presented a unique challenge to any new construction. The complex communication facility, serving as an electronic cable nexus for the Houston area, could not be relocated. Thus, the contractors were challenged to build a 56-story, 780-feet-high skyscraper around it. The foundation was excavated adjacent to the cable installation and the whole Western Union building was incorporated completely into the new structure. It is now embedded in the northeast corner, walled off. Office floors tower above it.
