Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 1990
The Woodlands
2005 Lake Robbins Drive
Spring, Texas

General Contractor:
Fretz Construction Co.
Engineer: Walter P Moore
Architect: Horst Berger

Built as an outdoor entertainment venue, the Woodlands Pavilion was quickly added to Houston’s list of construction landmarks. The stage is uniquely covered by a large-scale synthetic fabric tent made of Fiberglas and Teflon, the same material used to make Astronauts’ space suits. The six peaks of the distinctive roof are held up by a spider-like construction of steel arms above and below the fabric. The popularity of the entertainment venue has created a series of expansions to seating and adjacent service buildings. When hurricane Ike damaged the Pavilion in 2008, it was rebuilt with newly-strengthened steel and fabric. Fretz used a 310-feet-long tower crane with a lifting range of 246 feet. Crews worked for five months to repair and re-stretch the tented stage for the re-opening concert.
